As part of our aquaculture initiative, the Indiana Soybean Alliance has started the Advancing Indiana Aquaculture program. This Web site is part of that program. We have attempted to include as much information as possible for beginning and experienced fish farmers. While the information compiled here is not all-inclusive, we have tried to be as thorough as possible, covering all the various types of aquaculture relevant to Indiana and the Midwest. The Indiana Aquaculture Initiative is part of the Indiana Soybean Alliance’s strategic plan to develop new, local markets for Indiana soybean farmers through the sales of soy-based fish feeds. Focus Managing efforts by initial focus on three candidate species that we can produce in Indiana and target to specific markets: Hybrid striped bass, Largemouth bass, and Yellow perch. Plan of Work The following segments have been targeted for development to achieve the goal of the initiative's strategic plan: GUIDANCE: Aquaculture advisory council formed consisting of government, industry and university experts. Council guides the implementation of the aquaculture initiative. RESEARCH: Analysis of restaurants and grocers to determine market potential for Indiana farmed fish. ASSISTANCE: Development of business planning materials and an easily recognized web portal to access aquaculture materials. EDUCATION: Educational workshops to target potential new entrants into the industry. FINANCING: Connect prospective producers with funding institutions interested in supporting aquaculture.
